Damien Brailly

Damien Brailly is a photographer whose work revolves around the notion of territory, with a particular interest in how it is inhabited and the beliefs and imaginations that run through it. While he develops a documentary aesthetic in his images that tends towards objectivity (frontality, uniformity of light), it is through the choice of photographs that make up his series and their sequencing that he opens his work up to multiple interpretations. Over the last few years he has been working with the visual artist Anna Siekierska, who has led him to develop his research into the territory from a more than human perspective.

Les Sauvages” (the savages) is a commune about sixty kilometres west of Lyon. In this work, which takes the form of poetic archaeology, I’m looking for traces, encounters and clues that offer suggestions and answers about the social and geographical realities of this area and its young people between town and countryside.
