Les Sauvages” (the savages) is a commune about sixty kilometres west of Lyon. In this work, which takes the form of poetic archaeology, I’m looking for traces, encounters and clues that offer suggestions and answers about the social and geographical realities of this area and its young people between town and countryside.
In Altered vision I give a new definition to a site by moving around it, allowing it to be seen from a new angle and stripped of its past history. In order to talk about deterritorialisation, it is important to understand the nuances of the word ‘territory’, as well as the different meanings of the terms ‘site’, ‘place’ and ‘space’.
There was no canopy, and people grabbed their glasses and ran under the roof. In a minute there were only ashtrays on the tables. Some empty, some with the remains of cigarettes. I noticed that each of them was unique, as were the people who, until a few minutes ago, had been talking carefree at the tables, and the problems they were discussing.
This ongoing series is my visual journey through the vibrant, captivating and also melancholic world of fairs, street festivals, carnivals, and travelling circuses, mostly in Romania but also abroad. I am in the pursuit of the beauty that resides in chaos and of the extraordinary that hides in the most ordinary facets of life.
Initially focusing on portraits of the everyday life of my inner circle, over the years my work has moved away from the human figure towards a more contemplative approach, favouring urban landscapes and interiors with the patina of human use.
